Notes for Zefferelli vs Lurman comparison of Romeo and Juliet

comparison of Mercutio's death scene in two different movies

director Z for Zefferelli
1.  words start the fight
2.  sword fight as play
Mercutio and Tybalt laugh, shake hands, play with pitch forks, let each other out of deadly situations
3.  Mercutio's death => comedy leading into tragedy
4.  hearty laughter up to the realization point of Mercutio's death

director L for Lurhman
1.  music, guns, cars and swagger
2.  Tybalt beats down Romeo
3.  Mercutio intercedes to save Romeo (not to fight out of his own blood-lust)
4.  Romeo intercedes, allowing Tybalt to kill Mercutio
5.  dramatic tone throughout
6.  empty laughter
7. pathetic fallacy (weather sympathetic with character's emotions)
