chapter 13 and 14 TKAM notes A period

Chapter 14
The trial is about a rape case. She asked Cal. Cal. is not her mother. It is a tough thing to talk about. Asked her father, he says " Carnal knowledge by force without consent." Yes he answers but doesn't want to explain. Thank goodness she doesn't understand, but her dad did give her an answer. Scout and Jem get into a fight. She punches Jem in the mouth. He hits her. Scout is very happy they're fighting, it proves she is tough enough. If Jem wouldn't bother to fight, then they aren't equal. He did bother to fight so she feels equal. Jem was doing his own things and Scout was nervous that they were growing apart, now she knows they're not.

The runaway = Dill. He lies down next to Scout, innocently. He says, " Scout, let us get us a baby." He told her they can order babies from a foggy island. Scout claims they come down the chimney.

Chapter 13
Cal. is not in favor of Alexandra. Alex. says to fire Calpurnia. Alex. is just as racist as upper class southern. She is afraid that things will get told about the lovely white families rather than the black families across town.

HYPOCRISY IS WHEN YOU TEND TO BETTER THAN OTHER PEOPLE, LYING AND STEALING FOR EXAMPLE.

HW 3/27 and 3/28

Chapter 16:
Why does Dolphus Raymond “drink”?  What aspect of the town culture does his life reflect?

Period A notes

Ms. Dubose is always mean to Scout and Jem. She says to Jem that his dad Atticus is only as good as the N****** and trash he works with. On Jems birthday he buys a baton and a train with his birthday money. Jem destroys Ms. Duboses camellias in return for her bad treatment towards them. Atticus finds out about what Jem did but instead of beating him like other people would, he makes Jem fix the problem himself. He wants Jem to reflect on what he has done and realize why he shouldn't act that way.

Atticus's axiom: You don't judge someone until you walk in their skin.

This is even true for racist people!

Jems punishment is that he has to go to Ms. Duboses house every day and read to her with scout. What Scout and Jem dont know is that Ms. Dubose is actually using the reading sessions as a treatment to her addiction to morphine.

What Jem learned is that you can fix problems by being nice and working through things rather than beating up someones flowers and taking it out on them.

Empathy is understanding to take someone else's feeling into perspective

Apathy is when you just don't care

Sympathy is when you care and when you feel sorry for someone.

The story of Calpurnia's church.

Atticus is out of town at the state senate because he is a state senator.

Calpurnia's church is different from the one the children go to because its a black church. This is because the churches are separate due to segregation.

The style of singing in Calpurnias church is called Lining. Education is bad so there isn't much resources to learn.

Zeebo is a garbage man and a Pastor, also Calpurnia's son.

They do a fundraiser for Tom Robinson because he was accused of rape and they need money to fund his trial.

Lula does not want white people in her church!

" Its the same god ain't it "

Lula does not represent what all of the black people think about the white people in their town. Not the way everybody thinks but only one person does (Lula).

Mobs are a big influence to the people. They can get you to think certain ways and change your opinions on things. Therefore it is important to show that the mob of black people support Atticus and his children.

Notes for chapter 11/12

Mrs.Dobouse - she doesnt like Atticus. she doesnt like that he defends n******. She is brave because she wants to die without being addicted to morphine. She uses the kids' reading to help her get off morphine. Mrs.Dobouse actually likes Atticus a lot. Reading is a distraction so she doesn't need the morphine. She sets her alarm clock for longer each time so it helps her go longer without using the morphine.

Jem kills Mrs.Dobouse's bush because he was angry that Mrs.Dobouse insulted Scout after defending Atticus. As punishment they now have to read to Mrs.Dobouse.

If Mrs.Dobouse thought the kids really were little villains she wouldn't have them in her house. Atticus helped her with her will because he's a gentleman.

the kids go to church because Atticus is off to be a state senator for two weeks.

the church is a black church. It's not a rich church; they have no hymn books and it's not painted on the inside. One person would sing and the others would copy them because they couldn't read their own books.

Lula didn't want the kids there because it's a black church and they're white. The Lula argument is separate but equal is right. Lula is the only person that doesn't want the white kids in the church, so the black people aren't hypocritical about the equal rights, it's just the opinion of one person.

Not black and white things- Booradley is not actually a crazy person. When there's a fire across the street he helps them by putting a blanket around their shoulders to keep them warm. Atticus is not black and white because he's not against the black people. Atticus was concerned about his children being safe during the trial. Atticus brought his sister to help.

Race relations are not just a black and white issue. The racism goes both ways. The collection is for Tom robinson's wife because she can't get a job because her husband is being accused of rape. Calpurnia's sons name is Zeebo. The black people in the church all give money to help Tom.

HW 3/24 and 3/25

Read To Kill a Mockingbird chapters 13 and 14

With at least one properly cited integrated quote per chapter, answer the following analytic questions:

chapter 13:
Aunt Alexandra arrives in Maycomb as the trial approaches to be a proper role model for Scout and Jem, along with establishing "What Is Best For the Family" (129).  How does she do as a role model?  When she forces Atticus to scold his children, does that help or hinder her project to make the kids into the "products of several generations of gentle breeding" (133)?

chapter 14:
How is Atticus's statement--"From rape to riot to runaways"--an accurate summary of this chapter?  How is Scout at the center of each element of that statement?

class notes Chapter 9-10 TKAM

atticus shoots Tim Johnson
 This surprises Jem and scout
"Atticus was feeble:he was nearly 50" (lee 89)
He has no power but he has the power of being a crafty parent
he is a great reader because he is a lawyer
in the southern skeem he is not a man until he kills the dog
Atticus is weak in terms of the southern man code
Cecil Jacobs says that Atticus defends n****s
the rule of law is in conflict with the southern white mans code of honor
Other ways to stop the dog-Throw meat in a fenced area and close the gate to contain the dog
Atticus shot the dog because he thought it was a threat to his children, his priority is to protect his family
Francis is family and he says your dad is a n****r lover
(Scout dosn't know what it means)
Fracis has a new level of attack
Uncle Jack gets mad at scout for beating up Francis
Francis said that atticus is ruining the family
the average southern person in 1960 does not agree with what Atticus is doing
the change Uncle Jack has is the same change Harper Lee wants her audience to have
Francis kept going

HW 3/18 and 3/19

Read To Kill a Mockingbird
chapters 9 and 10

Answer the following analytic questions using at least one effectively integrated quote per paragraph.

chapter 9
Why does Scout ask her father if he defends "N*****rs"?  How and why has Atticus's prohibition against fighting worked with Cecil Jacobs, but not with cousin Francis?

chapter 10
What do the children learn about Atticus with how he handles the Tim Johnson incident?  How and why does Atticus's response transform Jem and  Scout's view of their father?

Sample quote integration sentences

Atticus attempts to teach his kids to be responsible and have them be successful, but he gives them a bit more freedom to make their decisions and to learn from any mistake. "Atticus ain't ever whipped me since I remember. I wanta keep it that way." (Lee 56) The author implies to the reader that Jem was responsible enough to return to get his pants on his own accord, even if there was the risk of losing his life. This means that Atticus had taught him to be brave and to do the right thing, because if not, he had the possibility of being whipped and he wanted to avoid that at all costs. If he learned the lesson after doing something wrong, then the next time, he would make sure he did things correctly.

The above response would score a 4/5.  It has many fine qualities including a good topic sentence, a well-chosen quote, and a thorough explanation.  It's missing a sufficient amount of context, leading from the topic sentence to the quote.
 _______________________________________
Atticus's parenting is somewhat stern, but not too much stern in many ways in chapter 5 and 6.  Here is a quote from chapter 6 "I've never been tanned before" (56) This quote shows that Atticus teaches there kids well to not do bad things.  Also showing that he is willing to discipline the children.

The example above would earn a 2/5.  The topic sentence repeats the same terms.  It makes the mistake of explicitly identifying the "quote".  It repeats the verb "show".  There's no context between the topic sentence and the quote.  The explanation needs more detail and insight.

HW 3/14 and 3/17

Read chapters 7 and 8 of To Kill a Mockingbird

Why does Jem have such a tough time writing a Thank You to whomever is leaving items in the tree for them?

Why does Jem confess to Atticus (72) when he finds out who put the blanket on his and Scout's shoulders during the fire?  What does Atticus's response show about his parenting?

Stop Copying

Ladies and Gentlemen,
This is my 17th year of teaching and 16th year at DY.  As a group of students, you have quadrupled the greatest number of acts of plagiarism I have ever experienced in my career.  No congratulations are in order!

Let me put this in the simplest terms possible.

1)  Copying as much as three words or more without attribution is an act of plagiarism for which you will earn a Zero for the assignment with no hope of making up the lost points.

2)  When you copy, put the words in quotes, include a proper tag phrase (e.g. According to Ed LeBlanc in the Cape Cod Times, "Harper Lee filled To Kill a Mockingbird with commentary on parenting, race and justice" (B9)), and include a parenthetical citation with the page number or more information like the author's last name or the publication if it's not in the body of your writing.

3)  The same is true for paraphrasing.  In other words, shifting a few words around doesn't change the fact that you have borrowed some one else's ideas. You must include a citation.

4)  Do your own reading.  Do your own thinking.  Do your own writing.  Otherwise, the only thing that you are doing is learning how to cheat.

5)  My goal is to help you become better learners, not better cheaters.

Sincerely,

Mr. Howell

hw 3/12 and 3/13

Read To Kill a Mockingbird chapters 5 and 6

write a 1 page analysis about Atticus's parenting in these two chapters

Consider his response to the children's attempt to get a message to Boo Radley (49) and his reaction to Mr. Radley's firing of his shotgun (55).
Also, work through the chain of reasoning that Jem displays when he decides to return for his pants (56) and what it shows about how Atticus has raised him.

HW 3/10 and 3/11

read To Kill a Mockingbird chapters 3 and 4

Write a 1 page analysis (in sentence and paragraph form)

If you're stuck, feel free to answer questions like the following:

A)  Compare the way the Ewell family engages the education system with the way Atticus, his brother John, and Scout have learned.

B)  Someone is "playing" with the kids by leaving items in the tree, just as the kids are making a "play" of the Radley family history.  Compare the two types of play by explaining the events of the story.

Notes on the AMerican dream/ American nightmare

American dream :
It's an essential concept to being an American.
In America, you can go from being poor to being rich.
In America, how hard you work is more important than who you are.
Example: Jared Canto can be just as successful as the child of Bill Gates

Ambitious people who start out poor with no family support, but who are smart and work hard have the OPPORTUNITY to achieve anything, anything!  One particular aspect of the American dream is the immigrants dream. You can become a business success story . First generation immigrants work 18 hours a day and go from having very little to making more money than they ever imagined.

The American nightmare:
The American nightmare is seen when the individual decides that cheating is an acceptable road to success. Scarface. The Great Gatsby. The Wolf of Wall street. Pain and Gain.  Breaking Bad.

The storyline goes like this: the protagonist is poor and angry. One or both of his/ her parents have been bad. He/she has a special talent. He/she begins to experience success. He/she realizes the very successful people are cheating in some way. Therefore, the hero decides to "Beat them at their own game." They achieve tremendous success. Final stage, they get caught. Scandal follows. They lose everything they fought so hard to gain. They realize that friends and family were the most important thing all along.

Genocide Olympics

Did it work?

Positive Outcomes:
Sudan President Bashir indicted by International Criminal Court

Divestment Success

World Paid More Attention (for a while)

Young people who acted as global citizens still on world stage

Negative Outcomes:

Bashir Still in Power

Killing switched from guns to starvation and deprivation
Thousands still in refugee camps

Apathy and indifference to suffering continues

My conclusion is summed up in a Theodore Parker quote recycled recently by President Obama:
"I do not pretend to understand the moral universe; the arc is a long one, my eye reaches but little ways; I cannot calculate the curve and complete the figure by the experience of sight; I can divine it by conscience. And from what I see I am sure it bends towards justice.

or as Martin Luther King, Jr. put it

"The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice."

Or as Steven Pinker established in his recent book, "The Better Angels of our Nature"
