Consider his response to the children's attempt to get a message to Boo Radley (49) and his reaction to Mr. Radley's firing of his shotgun (55).
Also, work through the chain of reasoning that Jem displays when he decides to return for his pants (56) and what it shows about how Atticus has raised him.
