Notes for chapter 11/12

Mrs.Dobouse - she doesnt like Atticus. she doesnt like that he defends n******. She is brave because she wants to die without being addicted to morphine. She uses the kids' reading to help her get off morphine. Mrs.Dobouse actually likes Atticus a lot. Reading is a distraction so she doesn't need the morphine. She sets her alarm clock for longer each time so it helps her go longer without using the morphine.

Jem kills Mrs.Dobouse's bush because he was angry that Mrs.Dobouse insulted Scout after defending Atticus. As punishment they now have to read to Mrs.Dobouse.

If Mrs.Dobouse thought the kids really were little villains she wouldn't have them in her house. Atticus helped her with her will because he's a gentleman.

the kids go to church because Atticus is off to be a state senator for two weeks.

the church is a black church. It's not a rich church; they have no hymn books and it's not painted on the inside. One person would sing and the others would copy them because they couldn't read their own books.

Lula didn't want the kids there because it's a black church and they're white. The Lula argument is separate but equal is right. Lula is the only person that doesn't want the white kids in the church, so the black people aren't hypocritical about the equal rights, it's just the opinion of one person.

Not black and white things- Booradley is not actually a crazy person. When there's a fire across the street he helps them by putting a blanket around their shoulders to keep them warm. Atticus is not black and white because he's not against the black people. Atticus was concerned about his children being safe during the trial. Atticus brought his sister to help.

Race relations are not just a black and white issue. The racism goes both ways. The collection is for Tom robinson's wife because she can't get a job because her husband is being accused of rape. Calpurnia's sons name is Zeebo. The black people in the church all give money to help Tom.
