Stop Copying

Ladies and Gentlemen,
This is my 17th year of teaching and 16th year at DY.  As a group of students, you have quadrupled the greatest number of acts of plagiarism I have ever experienced in my career.  No congratulations are in order!

Let me put this in the simplest terms possible.

1)  Copying as much as three words or more without attribution is an act of plagiarism for which you will earn a Zero for the assignment with no hope of making up the lost points.

2)  When you copy, put the words in quotes, include a proper tag phrase (e.g. According to Ed LeBlanc in the Cape Cod Times, "Harper Lee filled To Kill a Mockingbird with commentary on parenting, race and justice" (B9)), and include a parenthetical citation with the page number or more information like the author's last name or the publication if it's not in the body of your writing.

3)  The same is true for paraphrasing.  In other words, shifting a few words around doesn't change the fact that you have borrowed some one else's ideas. You must include a citation.

4)  Do your own reading.  Do your own thinking.  Do your own writing.  Otherwise, the only thing that you are doing is learning how to cheat.

5)  My goal is to help you become better learners, not better cheaters.

Sincerely,

Mr. Howell
