Sample quote integration sentences

Atticus attempts to teach his kids to be responsible and have them be successful, but he gives them a bit more freedom to make their decisions and to learn from any mistake. "Atticus ain't ever whipped me since I remember. I wanta keep it that way." (Lee 56) The author implies to the reader that Jem was responsible enough to return to get his pants on his own accord, even if there was the risk of losing his life. This means that Atticus had taught him to be brave and to do the right thing, because if not, he had the possibility of being whipped and he wanted to avoid that at all costs. If he learned the lesson after doing something wrong, then the next time, he would make sure he did things correctly.

The above response would score a 4/5.  It has many fine qualities including a good topic sentence, a well-chosen quote, and a thorough explanation.  It's missing a sufficient amount of context, leading from the topic sentence to the quote.
 _______________________________________
Atticus's parenting is somewhat stern, but not too much stern in many ways in chapter 5 and 6.  Here is a quote from chapter 6 "I've never been tanned before" (56) This quote shows that Atticus teaches there kids well to not do bad things.  Also showing that he is willing to discipline the children.

The example above would earn a 2/5.  The topic sentence repeats the same terms.  It makes the mistake of explicitly identifying the "quote".  It repeats the verb "show".  There's no context between the topic sentence and the quote.  The explanation needs more detail and insight.
