Period A notes

Ms. Dubose is always mean to Scout and Jem. She says to Jem that his dad Atticus is only as good as the N****** and trash he works with. On Jems birthday he buys a baton and a train with his birthday money. Jem destroys Ms. Duboses camellias in return for her bad treatment towards them. Atticus finds out about what Jem did but instead of beating him like other people would, he makes Jem fix the problem himself. He wants Jem to reflect on what he has done and realize why he shouldn't act that way. 

Atticus's axiom: You don't judge someone until you walk in their skin.

This is even true for racist people!

Jems punishment is that he has to go to Ms. Duboses house every day and read to her with scout. What Scout and Jem dont know is that Ms. Dubose is actually using the reading sessions as a treatment to her addiction to morphine. 

What Jem learned is that you can fix problems by being nice and working through things rather than beating up someones flowers and taking it out on them.

Empathy is understanding to take someone else's feeling into perspective

Apathy is when you just don't care

Sympathy is when you care and when you feel sorry for someone.

The story of Calpurnia's church. 

Atticus is out of town at the state senate because he is a state senator. 

Calpurnia's church is different from the one the children go to because its a black church. This is because the churches are separate due to segregation.

The style of singing in Calpurnias church is called Lining. Education is bad so there isn't much resources to learn.

Zeebo is a garbage man and a Pastor, also Calpurnia's son.

They do a fundraiser for Tom Robinson because he was accused of rape and they need money to fund his trial. 

Lula does not want white people in her church!

" Its the same god ain't it "

Lula does not represent what all of the black people think about the white people in their town. Not the way everybody thinks but only one person does (Lula). 

Mobs are a big influence to the people. They can get you to think certain ways and change your opinions on things. Therefore it is important to show that the mob of black people support Atticus and his children.
