-Brings up how Mayella was beaten severely to her face by someone who was left handed, however Tom Robinson had no use in his left hand and testified that he could only use his right hand.
- Mayella needed to make up this story or else she herself faced serious problems.
- Atticus brings up that MAYELLkissed a black man, no code mattered to her then, it only mattered to her afterwards once she was caught.
Atticus says that all men are created equal but only in the court of law.

class notes A period Tom's testimony, Atticus's closing

  • Tom is sad for mayella because she has no friends and her dad is an abusive drunk

Read To Kill a Mockingbird chapters 21 and 22 and 23

Answer the following prompts related to the chapters, integrating and citing at least one quote per answer.

A) Before the jury returns with its verdict, explain Calpurnia and Alexandra's different reactions to the children attending the trial.

B)  Why does the jury take so long to render its verdict?

C)  In chapter 23, why does Atticus say that he wished Bob Ewell didn't chew tobacco?  What are the strengths and weaknesses to his reaction?
